Rugs

A rug defines the zone, anchors the furniture above it, and adds warmth and texture at a scale no other element in a room can match. The Feelter's rugs collection spans jute, wool, bouclé, washable and waterproof constructions across rectangular, runner and round rug formats in a range of sizes, pile heights and palettes. Whether you are completing a living room that needs a floor rug to tie the furniture together, furnishing a hallway with a runner rug, or looking for a practical washable rug for a household with kids or pets, the range covers the full scope of how Australians use floor rugs. Designer rugs with genuine pattern and construction intent sit alongside everyday options, so the collection suits rooms where the rug is a feature as much as rooms where it simply needs to perform.

The Layer That Pulls a Room Together

Material is where a rug's character starts. Jute rugs bring natural-fibre warmth and an organic texture that works across coastal, Scandi and earthy interiors without trying too hard. Their slightly rough pile is best suited to low-traffic decorative use, or layered over another rug for texture. Wool rugs offer a softness underfoot that synthetic options cannot replicate, along with natural durability and a quality that improves with age in the right conditions. Bouclé and textured weave rugs echo the popularity of bouclé upholstery in contemporary Australian interiors, adding a layered, tactile quality to a living room that pairs particularly well with neutral sofas and light timber floors. For households where spills, pets and children are part of daily life, washable rugs and waterproof rugs offer the same design quality with significantly less maintenance anxiety. Glue-free rugs are a good alternative for households with allergies, supporting better indoor air quality because no glue is used in their construction.

Shape and format matter as much as material when choosing a floor rug. Rectangular rugs in standard and wide formats suit most living rooms and open-plan spaces, where the goal is to anchor a sofa and seating arrangement within a larger floor area. Round rugs work well under a dining table, at the foot of a bed, or in any placement where softening the room's geometry is the priority. Runner rugs are the right call for hallways, kitchens and narrow spaces where a full rug would be disproportionate. Glue-free rugs are worth considering for renters or anyone on hard floors who wants a rug that stays in place without adhesive or a rug pad.

Sizing is the decision most people get wrong. In a living room, a rug that is too small reads as a mat rather than an anchor. The standard guidance is to place at least the front legs of all seating pieces on the rug, with a larger rug accommodating all four legs for a more contained and considered look. Under a dining table, the rug should extend at least 60 cm beyond the table edge on all sides so that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. Digital photography rarely captures pile height, colour accuracy or texture in full, so visiting The Feelter's Melbourne showroom to see key pieces in person is worth the trip before committing to a larger floor rug.

Frequently Asked Questions

For most living rooms, a rug that allows the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it works well, typically 200 x 300 cm or larger. For a more contained look with all furniture legs on the rug, move up to 240 x 340 cm or 270 x 370 cm. As a general rule, go larger than you think you need. A rug that is too small shrinks the perceived size of the room, while a rug that fills the zone makes the space feel more deliberate and complete.

Washable rugs and waterproof rugs are the most practical choices for households with children or pets. These options are designed to handle spills, stains and regular cleaning without deteriorating. Performance synthetic fibres and flatweave constructions also clean easily and resist crushing under heavy use. Glue-free rugs are another good option, using only natural means of construction. If you prefer a natural-fibre look, a wool rug with a tighter weave is more forgiving than a jute rug in a high-traffic household.

Yes, a selection of rugs in the range are specifically designed to be washable and can be machine-washed at home. The product page for each rug specifies the care instructions, including whether it is machine washable, hand wash only, or spot clean only. Washable options are clearly labelled in the collection, so you can filter by this feature if it is a priority.

A waterproof rug uses a construction or backing that resists liquid penetration, making spills easier to wipe clean before they soak through to the floor. Standard rugs absorb liquid into the pile and backing, which can lead to staining or odour if not treated promptly. Waterproof rugs are particularly well-suited to dining areas, outdoor-adjacent spaces, and any room where spills are frequent.

A rectangular rug generally works best under a rectangular dining table, while a round rug suits a round or oval dining table particularly well. Whichever shape you choose, the rug should extend at least 60 cm beyond the table's edge on all sides so that dining chairs remain on the rug when pulled out for seating.

A rug pad placed between the rug and the floor is the most reliable solution, adding grip and protecting both the rug backing and the floor surface. Some rugs in The Feelter's range feature a non-slip backing. Glue-free rugs are designed specifically for hard floors and stay in place without adhesive, making them a practical option for renters or anyone who moves their furniture regularly.

Yes. The collection includes outdoor-friendly rugs made from UV-resistant, weather-resistant materials that hold up to sun, rain and outdoor foot traffic. These rugs are also well-suited to indoor spaces like kitchens, laundries and covered entertaining areas where moisture resistance is useful. Product pages specify whether a rug is rated for outdoor use.

Yes. The Feelter's Melbourne showroom has a selection of rugs on display. Pile height, texture and colour accuracy are all significantly easier to assess in person than from product photography, so visiting before purchasing a larger floor rug is worthwhile. Check the showroom page for current opening hours and the rugs currently on display.
