Picking Your Perfect Rug

Picking Your Perfect Rug

A rug can define, elevate, and completely transform a room—but getting the size or material wrong can do the opposite. The most common mistake? Choosing a rug that's too small. It can make a space feel cramped rather than anchored. So, when in doubt, go big.

Living Room

  • Go under, not around. Aim to have at least the front legs of your larger furniture pieces—like sofas or armchairs—on the rug. If space allows, all legs on the rug create a cohesive and grounded feel.

  • Modular freedom. Sofas like our Cloud, Nemo, or Petal series are ideal for rug-centric styling, giving you the flexibility to move pieces around.

  • Styling tip. It’s easier to design a living room around a rug than to find a rug that fits perfectly into an existing layout.

  • For small items. Lightweight pieces like side tables or floor lamps should be placed either fully on or off the rug to avoid rocking.

  • Open-plan living? Use a rug to visually separate the living and dining zones. All legs on the rug make the space feel defined, while front legs only lend a more relaxed, layered vibe. Leaving all legs off can create a more formal, gallery-like look.

Dining Room

  • Match the shape of your table. Round tables pair beautifully with round rugs, while rectangular tables suit rectangular ones.

  • Full coverage. Ensure the rug is large enough for both the table and chairs—even when chairs are pulled out. This helps prevent tipping and protects your floors.

Bedroom

  • Soft landings. A rug should be placed where your feet hit the floor when you get out of bed. At minimum, it should extend halfway up the bed.

Rug Colours

Don’t buy based on trend—rugs are long-term investments. Neutrals are the most versatile and can be layered with bolder décor over time. But if your space calls for colour, don’t be afraid to go bold.

Materials & Construction

Rug material plays a key role in both appearance and performance. Below is a quick comparison to help you choose what’s right for your space:

Wool / Wool Blends:

  • Naturally soft, durable, and stain-resistant
  • Flame-resistant and better for allergy-prone households
  • Higher initial cost but long-lasting and eco-friendly
  • Ideal for high-traffic areas, families, and pets

Polypropylene (PP):

  • Budget-friendly and available in larger sizes
  • Durable for everyday use but less resistant to stains
  • May collect more dust and require regular deep cleaning
  • Great for styling rental homes or low-traffic spaces

Quick Take: Rug Buying Tips from THE FEELTER

  • Size matters – A rug that's too small can shrink a space visually. When in doubt, size up.
  • Living rooms – Style around the rug first. Aim for front legs (or all legs) of furniture on the rug for a grounded look.
  • Open-plan layouts – Use rugs to zone areas. Full leg placement defines zones; front legs add comfort; no legs creates formality.
  • Dining rooms – The rug should suit the table’s shape and be large enough to accommodate chairs, even when pulled out.
  • Bedrooms – Rugs should sit at least halfway under the bed or at the sides where you step out.
  • Colour choices – Choose timeless over trendy. Neutrals are versatile, but bold works if the space suits it.
  • Wool rugs – Soft, durable, naturally stain- and flame-resistant. Higher cost but ideal for long-term, high-use areas.
  • Polypropylene rugs – Budget-friendly and great for larger spaces. Easier on the wallet but may require more maintenance.
  • Best tip? – Always plan your space around the rug, not the other way around.

Rugs are as personal as your space. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but with these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect rug to suit your home and lifestyle.
